Chapter 12

Elizabeth was still awake when she heard Jane come in. It had been difficult for her to fall asleep, as her mind was busy thinking about Charles proposing to Jane and attempting to determine what her feelings for Will were. She heard voices in the other room, so she knew Charles had also come in. She glanced over at the clock and saw that it was after one-thirty. She hoped he wouldn’t stay long.

She decided she would sit up in bed and read, knowing that if Charles had proposed – and she was certain he had – Jane would want to come in and tell her. After fifteen minutes, she heard him leave, and she turned off her reading device, waiting for Jane to come to the door.

Jane knocked lightly and whispered, “Lizzy! Are you awake?”

Elizabeth chuckled. “Of course, I am. Come in.”

Before she had even finished speaking, the door opened and Jane entered, turning on the light, and promptly sitting down on the bed.

“You won’t believe what happened tonight!”

Elizabeth paused before answering, debating whether to admit that she knew, but finally deciding to let Jane have all the joy in making the announcement.

“Charles asked me to marry him!”

Elizabeth let out a squeal and gave her sister a hug. “Jane, I am so happy for you! And I hope he knows he has the most beautiful, kind, and generous fiancée that any man could ask for.” She tilted her head. “You must tell me how he popped the question.”

“Oh, Lizzy. I was not expecting it at all! We drove through old town and got out and walked. We went into a little all-night bakery and got a raspberry Danish and coffee, and took them to the park, where we sat down and enjoyed them.”

“And did he drop down on one knee?”

Jane smiled. “Not immediately. After we finished, he took his napkin and wiped some powdered sugar off my cheek, and then looked inside the napkin, a look of surprise spreading over his face.”

“Surprise?”

“Yes! He had somehow hidden a small box in his hand and as he pulled it out, he slowly lowered down to one knee! Oh, Lizzy, I could barely breathe!”

Elizabeth drew her into an embrace. “Jane, I am so happy for you!” She suddenly drew back. “You did say, ‘Yes,’ didn’t you?”

Jane laughed and held out her hand so Elizabeth could see the ring. “I most certainly did!”

“It’s beautiful, Jane.”

“He is going to speak to Father tomorrow. He said he knew he was going to ask me soon, but tonight presented the perfect opportunity with Will driving you home.”

“I see.”

Jane looked at her with brows lifted. “I was pleased to hear that Will was taking you home. Did you enjoy your time with him?”

What could she say? The only thing they had talked about was their differing opinions on whether Charles was proposing too soon.

“Ah, yes. He was the perfect gentleman.”

Jane lifted a brow. “Did he…”

Elizabeth quickly shook her head, giving her sister a warning look. “He
